A land remembered... Paddling the St Johns River December 11, 2014

This time of year on the St Johns River 2 things are sure to happen. The Manatees return to their Winter retreat and the Barred Owls begin their mating calls. We came across both today. Andrew and Jo came over from the UK and a kayak trip on the St Johns was on the agenda. Up by the spring run the Manatees were coming and going. There's nothing like having a 1000 lb mammal swim under your kayak. Out in Snake Creek we spied the Barred Owl napping with his back to us. As he awoke, he gave us a good long stare. The Hawks, Egrets, Herons, Ibis, Anhingas, Cormorants and others joined us on our drift back to the take out spot. There are still lots of Fall reflections on the river with the Red Maples, Sweet Gum, Bald Cypress and Water Hickory Trees all colored up. This is the epitome of Central Florida and it's great stuff!
